The start area for both days is at least a 30 minute walk from the Mt. Bachelor parking lot. If you are planning to be competitive for either of the Wild Runs on Saturday, get yourself to Mt. Bachelor by 8:30, so that you can get to the mass start in time! There will be no start punch for the mass start. When I say go, your first punch will be at number 1 (if you don't skip it).

You make your own start time for the white or yellow courses on day 1 or all of the courses on day 2, so getting to the start will be more relaxed on these courses. There is a start punch for these courses. When you decide to go, punch the control right in front of you, then proceed to #1.

The white course on Saturday and both the white and yellow courses on Sunday will have marked routes indicated by dashed lines on the maps. The purpose is to get the beginning runners through terrain that may be beyond their abilities. The yellow course map on day 2 incorrectly indicates flagging on the trail. The trail is very obvious, so we will not add flagging to make it even more clear, this was mainly an artifact of the course setting tool which we were not able to fix.

The map scales are 1:15000 for just the 10K and 20K Wild Runs. The rest of the maps will be 1:10000 for both days.

Control descriptions will be attached to all maps, either printed on the front or glued to the backs. Additional control descriptions will be available at the registration at the Mt. Bachelor parking lot and at the start. All of the day 1 descriptions will be on one sheet and all of the day 2 descriptions will be on another, so you will need to bring some scissors or do some careful tearing. We will also have some textual descriptions available if you need them.

It is bow hunting season, so we are putting signs out warning them not to shoot us. Wear bright colored clothes so as not to look like a deer.

The Sportident controls will be put out in training mode, so there may be a slight delay for the leaders.

A brown course has been put together for day 2, because the person asking for it is a sweetheart.

Description

The Columbia River Orienteering Club and the Oregon Cascades Orienteering Klubb invite you back to Dutchman Flat for a weekend of orienteering fun in the wonderful magical forest across from Mt. Bachelor in central Oregon.

We will pay homage to the Three Sisters Mountain Goddesses by featuring the Ugly Stepsister Wild Run on Saturday, September 8. It will be a goat style race, which means that it is a mass start where you can skip one control and following is allowed. Anyone who dresses in a Cinderella ball gown gets a 5-minute head start. It will be in the vicinity of 20Km straight line distance. All controls but one will be of intermediate level of difficulty.

For those of you wanting less of a physical challenge, a shorter 10Km race, the Sisters of Mercy Wild Run, will also be offered. It will have all the same features--mass start, skip one control, and following is allowed. The one change is that runners dressed in full nun’s habits get the 5-minute lead.

For you beginners, we will have a white and a yellow course. I’m not sure what the lengths will be exactly, but expect them to be about the same as what you are used to.

Sunday, September 9, will have a complement of five courses—red, green, orange, yellow, and white. No following here. For those of you who have only run advanced courses on the west side of the mountains, the red and green courses will be a step up in difficulty because of the lack of a trail system at Mt. Bachelor. You can actually go off trail without giving blood to the scourge of the northwest, blackberries!

Maps and terrain: Map was developed for 2005 US Champs. 1:15000 for the 20K and 10K Wild Runs, 1:10000 for the rest

Registration: Pre-registration is closed. There will be very limited numbers of maps available for entry on the day (5 per advanced course).

Courses and Age Classes: We are not setting a Blue course on Day 2 (bare bones). Blue runners register for Red.

For those new to orienteering, remember that orienteering courses are measured on the straight-line route and will feel much longer than the quoted distance! Orange is recommended for those with good fitness and navigational skills, but little experience of technical orienteering on an orienteering map.

You can enter whichever course is appropriate to your skills. Results will be listed by course.

Directions: Go to Bend, then drive up into the mountains to Mt. Bachelor. Parking will be in the Mt. Bachelor parking lot. Follow the marked route to the start area on the other side of the highway.

Start Times: The mass start for the Ugly Stepsister and the Sisters of Mercy Wild Runs will be at 9:00am on Saturday (Cinderellas and nuns start at 8:55am). The white and yellow course starts will be between 9:30 and 11:30. Course closes at 3:00pm.

On Sunday, individual starts between 9:30 and 11:30. Course closes at 2:30.

Clinics: Beginner’s clinics will be offered on both days. The clinics will be ongoing while the starts are open, so just ask when you show up, and we’ll give you some tips.

Facilities: Mt Bachelor ski facilities are closed for the season. No store, no coffee, no flush toilets or water for purchase will be available at the meet site. Limited water will be available on the courses. Be prepared!

Hotels in Bend: On your own. We like the River House. Bend is approximately 22 miles from Mt Bachelor.

Camping: On your own, Some require Forest Service Permits. Please be sure to check whether permit is required. Closest ones:
