What a beautiful Oregon winter day--the weather was cool so that we
wouldn't overheat, the fog added more challenge to the orienteering,
and it didn't rain!  Joanne and Leon Malkin won the White course 
with a time of 32:53. They had so much fun they decided to join the 
club!  Eric and David Bateham posted the first time of 40:11 on the 
yellow course.  This withstood all comers until Erik Torniainen 
(sans Andrea) blistered the course in 22:02 at the end of the day.  
Erik also showed us that cross country ski training and a lot of 
Finn sisu can bring home the gold on the advanced course!  His time 
of 45:10 bested Ben Legg's time of 51:33.

There were many diverse activities going on at Bald Hill today 
besides orienteering.  In addition to the usual walkers, joggers, 
horseback riders, and mountain bike riders, we saw a couple training 
their huskies in a wheeled dog sled (the dogs swerved to happily greet 
people much to the dismay of the woman in the sled), 3 guys on 
mountain unicycles (especially impressive considering the climb and 
the muddiness of the trails), and a group using rock climbing equipment 
to harvest mistletoe from the tops of the oak trees by the barn.  They 
gave us a little piece before we left.  Oregonians know how to have a 
good time!

Okay, I'll admit it--it way too cold for the volunteers.  Thank you so 
much for your perseverance and help Ben, Dave, Jessica, Sheila, Erik, 
and Larry!
