By putting up a tarp and equipping ourselves with Rite-in-the-Rain paper, we managed to fend off the rain for yet another year at Chip Ross Park. It turned out to be perfect orienteering weather, and we had a good turn-out of people, drawing new orienteers from as far away as Bend and Vancouver. It’s easy to design challenging courses on this map (made by Andy Dale), as it has so much detail, and the hills provide a physical challenge as well! By all reports, new and veteran orienteers alike (including pugs, labs, my large furry neighbor Tito…) enjoyed themselves, despite the vast thickets of poison oak.
We had fun organizing the event, and appreciate the help of Andy, Jeff, Paula, Erik, Ben, and Dave—who provided the all-important tarp. Hope to see lots of you at future events. Look at our website for a complete schedule www.forestrunner.com/orca
By the way, if you’d like to try a real orienteering adventure, the next ORCA event (April 4th) is a 6-hour “rogaine” in the Arnold Ice Caves area near Bend. In a rogaine, you have a 6-hour time limit to find as many controls (in any order) as you can. This is a great variant of orienteering for those of you who like to hike, or, for ultra-runners looking for something interesting to do on a long run! There are more details on the website.
