National Orienteering Day Results

Skinner Butte and Alton Baker Park
Eugene, Oregon

October 3, 2004

It was a classic South Willamette fall day in Skinner Butte Park: cool & foggy. The orienteering competion was hot, however. Andy Dale blazed around the 6.7 Km Orange/ Green course, punching all 22 controls in just under 45 minutes, which included some on the fly course vetting as well as redirecting some orienteers looking for the start area… perhaps a suitable handicap for the man who made this map last summer. The competition for second place was fierce, with Jeff, Alex, and Mike separated by only 1:20. Jill Gregg was the first female finisher on this course, with Paula Whipple taking second. It should be noted that the O/G course was run Swiss style, with competitors copying their map on the clock. Despite this added pressure, it appears that nobody misdrew their circles as everyone managed to punch all the right controls. Kleshchev is becoming a familiar name on Oregon orienteering result lists – generally found near the top. For proof of this, look no further than the results for today’s yellow course, where Masha Kleshchev took first in 39:13. The Kruegar team of Daniel and Jeff was not far behind, finishing in 41:46. The yellow course also hosted a number of scouts from various local troops working on their orienteering requirements.

The five participants on the white course were all orienteering for the first time. The best times were posted by Josh Marean (12:52) and Ingrid Weisenbach (18:02) who clearly have the hang of this sport. This was our club’s national orienteering day meet, the focus of which is to attract newcomers to orienteering. Roughly 20 of the 42 participants today were first timers.

Huge thanks to volunteers Jeff, Paula, Andy, and Dave, who helped out all day, and Jill who helped pick up controls, and anyone else who I forgot to mention. These local meets would not be possible without the dedicated help of club members. I encourage everyone with an interest in this sport to volunteer whenever you can. Thanks also to Brunton and MapTech who provided compasses and mapping software which were handed out as door prizes.

Hope to see you all next month on the OSU campus!

Erik
