Sunday turned out to be a great day for orienteering with moderate temperatures and no measurable rain. Once again competitors traveled from far ( Portland, Dallas, Eugene, McMinville, Junction City…) and wide for an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful OSU campus and a little orienteering. Last year’s construction projects were completed, adding a few new features to explore.
The white course competitors finished within 50 seconds of each other. Mary C. took first on the yellow course with a blistering 33:35, a good 12 minutes in front of the nearest competition. ORCA and CROC members participated in a sprint-chase race with OSU staffers/students taking a 2 minute handicap to offset their familiarity with campus locations. Andy (of course) took first in the sprint, with Steve and Ben separated by a mere 2 seconds with Ben’s handicap added. Head to head competition added extra challenge on the chase portion. Chase finishes followed in the same order.
We had 4 groups that chose a non-competitive long course, a combination of sprint and chase. ORCA Paul Guthrie smoked his competition. Nice job.
Thanks to Andy and Larry for updating the map. Look for controls out the stadium, soccer fields, and OSU barns next year.

Side note: We’ve cancelled the Bald Hill meet due to a major attack of poison oak. Look for a new 2006 schedule in December or early January.
