This year, 32 Orienteers hit the controls at Chip Ross Park. It was a beautiful, clear, BRISK day…yes, “brisk” is a good word to describe it, with temperatures not breaking freezing until late morning. But the sun was out, the sky was clear…and the mud was frozen, so no muddy shoes! All in all, a near perfect day for Orienteering.
We had White, Yellow, Orange and Green courses on tap, with the Green being identical to Orange except that roads, paths, and fences were removed from the map to add to the navigational challenge. Green turned out to be the most popular course of the day, with 12 competitors. Making a surprise appearance all the way from Leeds, Great Britain, Andy Dale blazed through the Green course in 27:03.
This was the first taste of orienteering for several participants. First timer Robert Thompson won the Orange course in 1:09:45, and fellow greenhorn Rich Forrest claimed victory in Yellow with 1:01:12. (Rich, you sandbagger, next time you’re doing Orange!) Hopefully everybody enjoyed their courses, and we’ll be looking for you all at the next meet at Avery Park on Saturday, March 18!
